When you listen to baseball sportscasters, you will often hear terms such as"Batting Average(AVG)" or "Earned Run Average (ERA)", "Slugging Percentage(SLG)" , and others... They are the Baseball Statistics that are designed to more accurately evaluate a player's ability in the field and predict future performance. Most of all they help players to perform better by helping them to better understand their strengths & weaknesses and to compare their skills with those of other players.

Baseball Term

BA

What It Means

Batting Average(same as Average Hitting)

Type

Batting Statistic

Data Required

Total number of hits(H), Number of times at bats(AB)

How to Compute

(H / AB)

Example

Derek Jeter, one of the most popular of the NY Yankees, has 510 at bats so far with 162 base hits. His AVG is recorded as .318.

Analysis

Helps to predict the probability of a batter reaching base safely and his ability to advance runners. However, base hits do not always score runs. (Sabermetrics statistics are better at teasing out this information.) Any player with a BA over .300 is considered a "GOOD" hitter. A player with a BA below .250 is typically rated "NOT GOOD" as a batter.
